The Spark That Started Crafty Kits
Like all the best stories, ours began with a pinch of fate, a dash of madness, and a generous sprinkle of genius. (Though the madness bit was entirely me.)
Let’s set the scene, it’s 2020, the second lockdown. Banana bread is trending, Zoom quizzes are everywhere, and we’re all stuck at home trying to find something anything to keep our hands (and minds) busy. Enter, me, a soon-to-be retiree, armed with leftover computer monitors and a lifelong refusal to “put my feet up.
One Simple Question.
That Sparked a Whole New Journey
I’d been running a computer refurbishing charity helping long-term unemployed people back into work. When that came to a close in 2018, I was left with a mountain of computer equipment. (Honestly, you’ve never seen so many monitors.) Ever the upcycler, I decided to turn them into chalkboards, but they looked a little... meh. I needed a way to jazz them up.
That’s when I stumbled across decoupage. Cue a flurry of napkin-buying, messy experiments, and a rather artistic kitchen table. Once I saw how beautiful decoupage could make even the humblest object, I was hooked.
But here’s where the genius comes in. Over a post lockdown lunch, brainstorming what I could do, my daughter came up with, “Why don’t you make craft kits?” That question changed everything.
Fast forward through a whirlwind of glue, glitter, box sourcing, paper testing, and online research, and our very first Coaster Decoupage Starter Kit was born. It was a hit on Etsy—and more importantly, people LOVED it.
So we kept going.
Expanding Our Crafty Collection. More Kits, Much More Creativity
There was the Bottle Art Decoupage Kit, followed by the Fairy Light Bottle Kit (still a bestseller). Then came the Wonderful Daisy Coaster Kit and Clock Kit, inspired by my truly wonderful granddaughter Daisy, always the first to help, always doing things for others, always kind. In fact, the proceeds from those kits helped in a very small way to fund her Girl Guides trip to Southeast Asia in 2025. That’s the kind of magic that keeps us going.
From kitchen table to craft fairs to artisan markets, Crafty Kits took off. But something even more exciting started happening, other small business owners were asking if they could sell our kits too.
And that, dear reader, was our next big aha! moment.
